LAVA Art Glass Gallery & Studio offer Workshops and Courses in a variety of Art Glass principles.

The courses and workshops are designed to be personable and flexible, catering to learning needs and requirements.

 

Please be advised that cancellations on booked workshops and courses incur a fee of $30

 

Workshops are instructed by Brenda Ellen, the resident glass artist with over 27 years experience.

Brenda also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is an experienced instructor.

Come a long alone or with a friend and create a set of coasters.

 

Create your own 'Art that Flows' with this funky, hip, square design!

Create a set of four coasters using compatible colour combinations in kiln formed fused art glass. 

 

The workshop is 1.5 hours long and basic skills will be taught is a professional studio.

1. INTRODUCTION TO LEADLIGHTING COURSE

SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

PRE REQUISITES - NIL

This course is designed to give students an introduction to the art of Leadlighting and the world of Art Glass.

 

You will learn the fundamental principals in the craft of leadlighting. Students will be shown safe and correct methods of leadlighting including glass cutting, leading the piece together, soldering and professionally finishing a small leadlight panel. The emphasis of this course is to provide students with professional instruction to demonstrate and teach correct methods of construction and instill confidence to further explore their glass experiences. This course is an introductory course only, giving glass enthusiasts a taste of the medium. Many facets to leadlighting require advanced instruction and further training.

Advanced courses are available upon completion of this course.

 

The course starts with an introduction to the many facets of leadlight. The use of glass its properties and creative ways to use glass are discussed. Cartoon design (name given to a leadlight design) is explored, tools, equipment and materials are demonstrated and discussed and studio safety addressed. Students can select a pre designed cartoon or be guided designing their own.

 

The following weeks students are taken through the steps of cutting glass, leading their panels, safe soldering techniques, puttying their panels and finishing off with polishing and alternative display methods.

Classes are one to one to ensure personal attention to your learning requirements.

Course notes are distributed at the completion of the course for reference on future projects.

SKILL LEVEL - ADVANCED

 

PRE REQUISITES - GLASS CUTTING SKILLS RECOMMENDED

 

This course is designed to teach students who have experience with glass cutting how to build a Tiffany Lampshade using a copper foiling technique.

 

COPPER FOILING:                                Wrapping pieces of glass in thin copper foil and joining them together with solder

TIFFANY STYLE LAMPSHADE:            Tiffany designed stained glass windows and lampshades

 

The technique will be shown for a ‘panel’ form Tiffany style lampshade.

 

On completion of this course you would have learnt:

The course is currently run as private tuition but can be offered with small groups.

3. DICHROIC EXPERIENCE

Jewellery - The Bling Thing

 

  Kiln Formed Glass

 

 Dichroic

 

SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

 

PRE REQUISITES - NIL

 

This workshop is designed to give students an introduction to the beauty of using glass as components for jewellery, with the inclusion of dichroic glass. Classes are conducted in a professional Art Glass Studio by Brenda Ellen an experienced Glass Artist.

 

FUSING:                       Melting layers of glass to create design

DIICHROIC GLASS:     Glass containing multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides which give the dichroic optical properties.

 

On completion of this workshop you would have:

                            

  1. Learnt the basic and correct skills required to use glass as an artistic medium and glass cutting techniques
  2. Learnt correct and safe studio procedures
  3. Learnt the principles of heating glass
  4. Been instructed on how to create glass jewellery  components 

 

The workshop runs with one or more students by appointment

4. GLASS MOSAICS

 

 Flower mosaic

 

SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

 

PRE REQUISITES - NIL

 

This workshop is designed to teach students the art of mosaics using glass as the creative medium.

Students will design a piece of a 300mm footprint

 

You will learn how to select and prepare surfaces, design and apply the mosaic, grout and finish off the surface.

 

All the materials are included in the price of the course.

 

On completion of the workshop you would have:

 

1. Learnt the fundamentals of mosaic design

2. Learnt the various application and design techniques for mosaics

3. Been exposed to glass as a creative mosaic medium

4. Learnt how to cut glass and use specialised tools for mosaics

5. Made a mosaic platter or item or your choice

6. Received notes on the workshop information

 

This workshop is 6 hours in duration

 

Price includes: Glass Mosaic Kit (includes: plaque, glass, adhesive, grout, sealant)

Use of studio tools to make your, mosaic.

5. INTRODUCTION TO FUSING & SLUMPING

 

 Kiln Formed Glass

SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

 

PRE REQUISITES - NIL

 

This workshop is designed to give students an introduction to fusing and slumping glass.

 

FUSING:                Melting layers of glass to create design

SLUMPING:           Altering the shape of glass by controlled heating

 

Students can choose to make either a small platter or bowl or an art piece.  

 

On completion of this workshop you would have:                       

  1. Learnt the basic and correct skills required to use glass as an artistic medium
  2. Learnt correct and safe studio procedures
  3. Explored the behaviour of glass at different heat temperatures
  4. Learnt the principles of heating glass
  5. Discovered the materials used for kiln forming glass
  6. Been instructed on how to build a fused panel               
  7. Been instructed on how to slump glass and shown various alternatives
  8. Build, fused and slumped a project of your choice within a 300mm footprint

 

Workshops currently run with one student at any one time

6. CHILDREN's WORKSHOP

Portraits in Glass

   

 

SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER

 

PRE REQUISITES - NIL

 

Why not get Creative with your child and their friends!

 

This workshop is designed to give parents and their children and or their friends a fun interactive activity in a professional studio creating their portrait in glass.

 

The workshop is suitable for children form the age of 5 to young adults.

We will explore self-portraits and transfer images into glass.

 

This workshop is generally offered during school holidays, however can be anytime by appointment.

Parents are required to stay with their children.

 

There is no glass cutting involved and the course is safe and supervised.

 

The workshop is 1.5 hours in duration

 

COST of workshop includes:

Portraits can be collected 2 days after the workshop.

 7. RAKING & COMBING MOLTEN GLASS

 

    Peacock Raking

 

SKILL LEVEL - INTERMEDIATE

 

PRE REQUISITES - EXPOSURE TO KILN FORMED GLASS

 

This workshop is as hot as it gets with kiln formed glass. This workshop is not a beginners course. Raking is an advanced technique that requires supervision.

 

Raking or combing glass is the manipulation of molten glass by dragging the glass when it is at its hottest.

 

The workshop is over three stages:

8. COPPER FOILING - Boot Camp

9. (STAR) Short Term Artist Residency - 2019

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

 

LAVA Art Glass Gallery & Studio is offering short term Art Glass residencies in 2019.

 

STAR is a bespoke residency which:

  • Provides a unique individual opportunity in a glass studio
  • Works towards enriching the artistic skills and knowledge of art glass
  • Provides a diverse art and cultural experience of the region
  • Provide experience of running an art business. This includes communicating with the public and working in the public eye. The operation and daily expectations of running a gallery, curation, marketing and promoting themselves as an artist
  • Works towards creating a body of work for exhibition
  • Offers mentorship by a practicing artist in a unique business environment

 

These residencies offers emerging artists the opportunity to develop a body of work in either kiln formed glass or leadlight. The purpose of the residency is to provide professional development and mentorship in the art glass industry and offer the opportunity to create a body of work to exhibit. The recipient of the STAR program will be able to hold a solo exhibition at the LAVA Gallery, and two other locations, a regional Art Gallery and a location in the city of Perth, the following months post residency.

 

The Studio is visible and accessible to the public, attached to a niche Art Glass Gallery. The STAR program is not only an opportunity to have access to specialised studio equipment, but also gain insight and experience of the business side of a commercial niche gallery and the life of an practicing artist in this unique environment.

 

STAR’s will have full access to a working studio, three kilns and cold working facilities. Artists must be familiar with and have developed skills when using the studio equipment as part of the residency. Materials used are a cost incurred to the artist. Use of equipment, tools and electricity is part of the residency.

 

The residency includes one day a week face to face mentorship instruction with the resident artist on various art glass techniques and business management.

 

STAR’s are expected to participate on a full time bases working towards an exhibition quality body of work. The STAR program looks to add a unique experience for the artist and the arts culture of the region, promoting glass as an form of artistic expression and career pathway adding value of art and culture in society and the region.

 

STAR participants will have complete access to the studio and electricity is absorbed in studio costs, however the use of glass and consumables for the body of artwork created is the cost of the artist. This is offered at a discounted rate.

 

Accommodation and food is to be arranged by the artist. This residency is ideal for a local emerging artist, however is open to any interested artist.

 

STAR participants will be required to work one day a week in the adjoining LAVA Art Glass Gallery, to round off the residency experience.
